The RAPt Addiction Counsellor Trainee Programme is a one year, full time, five days a week course leading to a qualification in addiction counselling. It consists of one day training (normally at RAPt’s head office in London) and four days working with a rehabilitation team in a prison. The course covers all aspects of addiction and is based on the 12-Step model of counselling, although other models are also included. There are three modules which provide a qualification at certificate levels 2 and 3 in Counselling Skills and Counselling Studies with the CPCAB (Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body).

CARAT (Counselling, Assessment, Referral, Advice and Throughcare) teams work in all UK prisons. They offer valuable support to substance misusers caught up in the criminal justice system. Their job includes informing offenders about the effects of drugs. CARAT teams also help substance misusers access rehabilitative services. RAPt runs a six-month CARAT Worker Training Programme. This involves one day per week at our London based training centre and four days per week working as a trainee within a prison-based CARAT team.
By the end of the programme trainees should be ready to take their place in a CARAT team, as an apprentice CARAT worker - subject to vacancies and a successful interview. It is our hope to be able to offer employment to all those who successfully complete our Trainee CARAT Worker Programme; however there are no guarantees of continued employment with RAPt.
