Surrey Alcohol Brief Intervention Service (SABIS) is designed to cater for the county's adult alcohol users who have problems associated with their alcohol consumption and have come to the attention of the criminal justice system or the crime and disorder reduction partnerships. We receive referrals through custody officers, arrest referral workers, police divisional anti-social behaviour units, community incident action groups and the probation service. We meet with clients for an initial triage assessment and collaborative care plan, after which we conduct up to 12 sessions of 1-2-1 work with the client. The sessions consist of various topics including: alcohol education; harm minimisation; cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT); cycle of change; decisional balance; triggers; avoiding high risk situations and other relapse prevention techniques. We also run groups in collaboration with English Churches Housing Trust at Vaughn House in Guildford. We are located at accessible sites throughout the county where our highly trained and skilled staff work with clients in an effort to reduce crime and improve health in Surrey. Clients who access our service are much more informed and aware of the effects of their drinking behaviour in the community and on themselves. After attending SABIS sessions, clients may, if appropriate, be referred on to further treatment provided by our partner agencies in Surrey.
